Remember the following Voëlkop essentials:

  • Mosquito repellent (this is a malaria-free area – thus no malaria prophylaxis required)
  • Sunblock (the sun is hot throughout the year, even in winter)
  • Towels (bathing and swimming)
  • Bedding (for a nominal fee, arrangements can be made for tourists)
  • Crockery, cutlery and cooking utensils (depending on the kind of accommodation you choose – see the “Accommodation” tab)
  • Wood, charcoal, and ice but these are also on sale at the bar
  • A full bar is available and the restaurant serves home-cooked meals daily. Light meals are always available through the day. You can thus save yourself the hassle of cooking.
  • The Bapong shopping centre is only 11 kilometres away where you can find everything you need (a pharmacy, butchery, Shoprite, ice cream parlour, nail bar and a barber shop)
  • For fresh produce such as milk and vegetables, the local village shop is just 1 km outside the main Voëlkop gate (next to the shebeen) and besides for fresh veggies, you can also purchase basics necessities such as soap, a toothbrush, bread, milk, snacks and last week’s Sowetan. Prices are extremely reasonable and it is good practice to support the locals because they are our friends and security. Be friendly, take your time and you might even get discount too (a smile goes a long way)
  • In case of a medical emergency, Brits is only 25 km away where Brits Medi Clinic is located.
